Choosing the Right Pressure Washing Pump
Flow, pressure, and drive type — get these three right and a pump will outlast the machine it's bolted to. Here's how to read the specs that actually matter when you're replacing or upgrading a pump.
GPM Moves Dirt, PSI Lifts It
It's tempting to chase the highest PSI number, but flow (GPM) is what rinses contamination away and determines how fast you actually work. Pressure breaks the bond; flow carries it off. For most surface work, more GPM beats a few hundred extra PSI.
Match the Pump to the Engine or Motor
A pump has to be paired to its power source by shaft type, RPM, and horsepower. Spec a pump your engine can't turn at rated RPM and you'll never hit the numbers on the box — or you'll cook the motor. Confirm shaft diameter and orientation before you order.
Plunger vs. Axial
Direct-drive axial pumps are lighter and cheaper and fine for intermittent use. Triplex plunger pumps run cooler, handle continuous duty, and rebuild instead of replace — which is why pros doing daily work run them. If the machine earns its keep every day, go plunger.
